SUMMARY:Standby Guardianship Training
DESCRIPTION:Interested in Taking Action to Help Immigrants in the Washington Area? Learn the skills to help.  \nJoin attorney (and Temple Sinai member) Cam Crockett for a training session on Family Safety Planning and Standby Guardianship. During this two-hour training\, you will learn how to help migrant families in Maryland (not DC or VA) fill out Standby Guardianship forms that allow parents to plan for the care of their minor children in the event the parents are deported or detained.  You DO NOT need to be a lawyer to help families with this process so this event is open to all TS members! \nCome learn more about why the need for these forms is so urgent and how you can help with this very important and timely task. This training is in-person only at Temple Sinai on Friday\, November 7 at 1:30pm – 3:30pm in the Beit Midrash. Information about opportunities to meet with and provide assistance to immigrants will be coming soon for temple members.  This important work does not require a big time commitment. \nIf you attended the previous training on standby guardianship at the temple\, this course will be a needed refresher and explicit preparation for upcoming volunteer opportunities. \nRegister here

(Please enter “Thanksgiving” in the payment notes). \nAs part of this project\, we are also collecting boxes of mac and cheese! Bring your boxes to the collection bin in the member lounge (by the security desk) between November 2 – 16. \n*Organizations receiving baskets include The Family Place\, Wheatley Education Campus\, Sinai House\, Roosevelt High School\, A Wider Circle\, and Highland Elementary School. \nPlease register in advance HERE

SUMMARY:Tu B'Shvat Seder
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Tu BiSh’vat\, the Jewish “New Year for Trees\,” with a meaningful evening honoring nature and spiritual growth. Cantor Rhodes will lead a Tu BiSh’vat Seder followed by a vegetarian potluck dinner and an opportunity to hear from guest speaker Mike Tidwell\, Executive Director\, Chesapeake Climate Action Network. \n6:00 to 6:30: 30-minute Seder led by Cantor Rhodes \n\nTu B’Shvat is the Jewish “New Year for Trees.” This holiday celebrates nature’s beauty\, calls us to our responsibility to care for the earth\, and open the journey into our own spiritual growth. During the seder\, we eat symbolic fruits and nuts\, each representing aspects of the natural and spiritual world: fruits with inedible peels (protection and physicality)\, fruits with edible peels (balance of inner and outer worlds)\, nuts (spiritual potential)\, and dried fruits (wisdom and life’s cycles). We offer blessings of gratitude for the earth’s abundance\, reflecting on our connection to creation and our duty to nurture it. As we share this meal\, we renew our appreciation for nature’s gifts and commit to planting seeds of kindness\, growth\, and environmental stewardship.\n\n6:30 to 7:00: Potluck dinner \n\nAttendees are asked to bring a vegetarian side dish or dessert\, according to the first letter of the attendee’s last name. (A-P bring side dish; Q-Z bring dessert)\n\n7:00 to 7:30: Guest speaker\, Mike Tidwell\, Executive Director\, Chesapeake Climate Action Network \n\nTidwell is a journalist\, author\, and climate activist living in Takoma Park\, MD. His most recent book is an exploration of global warming’s impact in his own front yard\, called The Lost Trees of Willow Avenue: A story of Climate and Hope on One American Street (St. Martin’s Press\, March 2025).\n\nPlease register in advance
