SUMMARY:JUFJ Legislative Meetings
DESCRIPTION:Temple Sinai has long collaborated with Jews United for Justice (JUFJ)\, a grassroots community working in both D.C. and Maryland for social\, racial\, and economic justice. \nThe new Maryland General Assembly will convene in Annapolis on January 11. JUFJ is now organizing meetings with state legislators\, to advocate for legislative priorities in areas ranging from immigrants’ rights and court and prison reform\, to transforming policing\, maintaining rental assistance\, and implementing paid family leave laws. JUFJ works effectively with a range of partners representing Marylanders most impacted by these issues\, but adding your voice as a concerned Maryland Jewish voter is critical! \nTo sign up to participate in one of these meetings (to be held via Zoom starting the week of December 12)\, click here\, where you can also confirm in which Maryland legislative district you reside. You can also get more details on JUFJ MDGA legislative priorities\, and videos of training sessions for these meetings are also available for your preparation. Questions? Contact Steve Metalitz.

SUMMARY:What Now?: Gun Violence Prevention Policy Options after "Bruen"\, "The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act"\, and the Results of the 2022 Mid-Term Elections
DESCRIPTION:The Temple Sinai Gun Violence Prevention Group hosts a virtual panel discussion with:\nJoe Danielsen\, New Jersey Assemblyman (D-Middlesex\, Somerset)\, a chief sponsor of New Jersey bill S4769 to require New Jersey gun owners to purchase liability insurance and also “a recreational hunter who supports both the Second Amendment and public safety”\nJosh Horwitz\, Co-Director\, Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions\nKelly Sampson\, Senior Counsel & Director of Racial Justice\, Brady Campaign\nDr. Michael Siegel\, M.D.\, M.P.H.\, Professor\, Public Health and Community Medicine\, Tufts University\, School of Medicine\, and author of a new report issued by the new GVP group 97Percent entitled “Finding the Common Ground in Gun Safety”\nRob Wilcox\, Federal Legal Director\, Everytown for Gun Safety\nSteve Klitzman\, Chair\, Temple Sinai GVP Group\, Moderator \nNow that the Supreme Court has struck down New York’s “concealed carry” limits on who may carry guns in public (New York State Rifle & Pistol Assn.\, Inc. v. Bruen decided on 06/23/2022)\, state lawmakers there and in other states are reviewing and in some cases strengthening their concealed carry permit laws to deter further gun violence. Justice Clarence Thomas’s majority opinion made clear that the constitutionality of restrictions is historically “settled” in “sensitive places” such as legislatures\, courtrooms and polling locations.  “Mmodern regulations” may “prohibit” the carry of firearms in “new” places. Given that\, a number of states are enacting a more expansive list of so-called “sensitive places” where guns may not be carried. Though Justice Thomas did not specify which those might be\, during oral arguments in November\, several justices pondered that they might include public transportation\, crowded venues\, university campuses and places where alcohol is served. \nMoreover\, Justice Brett Kavanaugh noted in a concurrence joined by Chief Justice John Roberts that while states may not impose restrictions that prevent “ordinary\, law abiding citizens” from carrying a gun to defend themselves\, states can still enact rigorous requirements for a public carry permit\, such as stringent background and mental health records checks and completion of regular training courses. \nAnother promising reform for states to consider would be to require gun owners to possess firearm liability insurance. Not only would such a requirement ensure that victims of gun violence can recover for their losses and “provide financial incentives for responsible arms carrying\,” but it also draws strong historical support from a host of 19th century “surety laws” which Justice Thomas cited in his opinion.  These were laws requiring gun owners to post bond in order to carry a gun. \nA distinguished panel of GVP experts will discuss these and other state and local responses to the Bruen decision as well as implementation of the provisions of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act enacted in June 2022.  We will also discuss the implications of the results of the 2022 mid-term elections regarding further progress on gun safety reforms on the federal\, state and local levels. \nFor more information please contact Steve Klitzman\, Chair\, Temple Sinai GVP Group. \n  \n[button link=”https://templesinaidc-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcscu-uqDguGdbk2SzKl_BHVjTiyRPefyjn” color=”black” newwindow=”yes”] Register[/button]

SUMMARY:Migrant Support Symposium "Asylum: Lifeline or Limbo?"
DESCRIPTION:Please join Temple Micah\, HIAS\, and The Davis Center for Social Justice at Temple Sinai in a discussion on migration\, asylum\, and justice. This program will examine two of the most significant and problematic programs along the United States-Mexico border in recent history and implore participants to consider how they can demand and support a more just asylum system in the United States. Newly-arrived immigrants from Afghanistan\, Honduras\, Ukraine and elsewhere all require an equitable and efficient pathway to long-term legal status. Taking a careful look at the policies governing our southern border\, as well as the many ways that HIAS provides legal and asylum services to migrants in need\, allows us to think about how to approach the broken immigration system we face today and how to demand better on behalf of those seeking safety at our shores. \nDetails: In-Person at Temple Micah (2829 Wisconsin Ave NW) or Zoom. Advance registration is required. \n[button link=”https://templemicah.shulcloud.com/form/migrant-support-symposium-june-2022″ color=”black” newwindow=”yes”] Register[/button]

SUMMARY:Juneteenth Film Screening: Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, June 19\, we will be hosting a film screening of Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America at\nEdlavitch DC JCC\n1529 16th St NW\nWashington\, DC 20036 \n \nJuneteenth has long been celebrated by African Americans in the U.S.\, recognizing June 19\, 1865\, when many enslaved people in Texas learned they had been freed. Although President Abraham Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation two years earlier\, it could not be enforced in many places until after the end of the Civil War in April 1865. Two months after Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered\, Union Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger and his troops arrived in Galveston\, Texas\, with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. \nTemple Sinai is co-sponsoring this event with Washington Hebrew Congregation and several other congregations. \nLearn More and Buy Tickets

SUMMARY:Poor People’s Campaign Moral March on Washington and to the Polls
DESCRIPTION:Join us on June 18 for the Poor People’s Campaign Moral March on Washington and to the Polls! Inspired by the Rev. Martin Luther King\, Temple Sinai has long been a leading supporter of this initiative\, which advocates for the needs of low-income Americans. Rabbi Diamondstein will play a prominent role in this kid-friendly\, meaningful\, multi-faith experience and musical accompaniment will help stir us for the Rally to follow. \nThe March will begin after the service and end with a Rally at the west front of the Capitol (3rd & Penn.) SUMMARY:"Community Violence Intervention Programs" Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Breaking The Cycle of Gun Violence Through Community Intervention: How to Define\, Fund\, Measure\, and Sustain CVI \nThe GVP Group is presenting its second Zoom Webinar of 2022 on “community violence intervention” (CVI) programs. These are community-based\, public health oriented\, data-driven strategies which already have documented reduced gun violence in some U.S. communities\, e.g.\, in Oakland\, CA\, Detroit\, MI\, St. Louis\, MO\, Boston\, MA\, and New York City\, less so yet in D.C.\, Baltimore\, and Pittsburgh\, etc. President Biden’s original “Build Back Better” budget plan would have authorized $5 billion over 8 years for these CVI programs across the country. GVP activists are now supporting a separate CVI authorization and appropriation of $750 million for Fiscal year 2023.  More details here. \nFor information about Community Violence Intervention (CVI) programs\, click here. \n[button link=”https://templesinaidc-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUsd-GopzkoHtLreiPduwTG8SFOzNJGd4hk” color=”black” newwindow=”yes”] Register[/button]
